Shriver is stepping out of her comfort zone by building a business dedicated to cognitive wellness.
For Maria Shriver, becoming an entrepreneur at 65 was not on her vision board.
A longtime advocate for women’s Alzheimer’s research — and protein bar fanatic — Maria couldn’t find a nutrition bar built for brain health. Combined with her aspiration to try something new, Maria decided to step outside of her comfort zone and start a company dedicated to cognitive wellness.
“For so long, I tried to make an idea I had into a reality by convincing others to bet on me. I got one ‘no’ after another. Everywhere I went, people smiled at me and then said ‘Um, no, thank you.’ I felt the ageism and the fear at every meeting. Then my son Patrick said, ‘Mommy, just go try it yourself. Bet on you. Do what you believe in. I’ll help you. If not now, when?’” Maria wrote in a recent edition of the Sunday Paper.
Together, Patrick and Maria started MOSH, a line of health bars with ingredients that serve a specific purpose in supporting brain health. This mother-son duo’s goal is to build a family of brain-friendly products that help find a cure for Alzheimer’s — a cause close to both of their hearts after seeing Maria’s father slowly succumb to the disease.
Maria’s newest chapter in an already storied life and career reminds us all how leaning into something new and betting on ourselves can lead to mind-blowing possibilities.
